In the summertime they get soft and your tires will slide/skid on them. Especially exciting in a parking lot at low speeds and your front tire starts sliding. (Motorcycle tires are rounded as opposed to the flat tires you see on cars, so the contact patch that actually touches the ground is much smaller. And since they're rounded, a loss of traction creates a lot more movement felt by the rider than you would feel in a car.)


I tried it once, basically your rear tyre finds the track and then follows it, so you end up at the mercy of the tar snake and hold on for dear life, or man up and accelerate off of it; never to try it again

As a motorcyclist, people WAY over emphasize tar snakes. The rider, themself, causes the crash by getting tense and reacting to the tiny slide and making MORE inputs. I ride over them at full speed in the mountains.


Come to New England. Our roads are 90% tar snakes. It's constant cold weather + heavy traffic that breaks up the asphalt.

I think the ones made like the one shown above are fine. There must be another, crappier way they're made, because I do see ones that stand out more from the road surface and are fairly slick. When there are a *lot* of those, they are at the very least annoying and distracting.

That's one kind, and the kind rarely used on public roads. I worked for an asphalt repair crew for a couple of years. What we used were basically large metal funnels about a yard high and 12" diameter at the top. At the bottom were angled nipples made from galvanized pipe. Place nipple in crack and shuffle backwards until crack is filled or you run out. And we had a [router machine](http://www.marathonsealing.com/farza/uploads/2016/03/Asphalt-Crack-Router-in-action-1-495x400.jpg) that used a bunch of what looked like chunky boi ninja stars on a big wheel to cut out the cracks. The routing and preheating were needed to make sure everything stayed adhered to the road metal and that there was enough rubberized tar to keep the crack full during seasonal expansion and contraction. We used rubber squeegees as seen here (called strikers) only when the client wanted a very smooth finish. Occasionally that would be a municipality, but most often it was a small airfield who would have us add striking to the contract.

Did you put any sort of paper over the cracks after they were tared? I remember riding my bike as a kid and one of the roads must have been very recently repaired because there was fresh tar on all the cracks with what looked like toilet paper stuck over them. This was a country road with lots of cracks so it wasn't just an odd bit of paper or something that got stuck, it was all over.


It was probably a fiber asphalt crack sealant. Some have polyester fibers to improve the wearing surface. When overbanding, which is the method shown in the video, it can help the application go a bit smoother and keep it from being degraded by traffic. Barbarian318 accurately describes two methods above, overbanding and routing/filling. Overbanding can be pulled out by traffic on a hot day in some cases and could cause issues when you overlay with asphalt as the crack seal will expand with heat.

As many times as I've done acid, I think the most I ever did was like 600 ug, I've never "truly" hallucinated, as in seeing stuff that wasn't there like snakes and shit. It's always just the "standard" hallucinations.

Was on Acid with a few friends while visiting them in TN. We decided to have a bonfire. Turns out there was a rattle snake nest in the wood pile. Everybody except for one person was peaking. Our buddy who had only micro’d to be the trip sitter got tasked with dispatching a bunch of baby snakes. Hahaha all technical terms. Cutback asphalts are just vacuum tower bottoms fluxxed with a solvent like toluene. An asphalt emuslion is asphalt and water, plus an emulsifier. The emulsion breaks after application, so the water sorta crashes out leaving just asphalt behind. A PMA is a Polyner Modified Asphalt, with the polymer often being an elastomer to improve rutting resistance


Explaining technical terms with more technical terms is not very helpful.

I'm blind to my own bias until pointed out, so I appreciate the feedback. Would you get any value out of a more detailed breakdown? I'm versed in just about all things related to asphalt aside from niche products, and I'm capable of making my own hot mix starting all the way from crude oil (provided I have access to the right facilities and tools)


Please tell us more! For me specifically, I did not understand the first part about the cutbacks and am not sure why you need to emulsify asphalt with water (also kinda curious what on earth would work as an emulsifier in that case)


So a good way to think about Cutbacks is theyre liquid asphalt binder (aka the glue that holds all the rocks and dust of the road together) diluted with some kind of chemical that will evaporate at a desired rate, leaving you with just the glue. You can pick your solvent to control the evaporation rate. This of course is shit for the environment so it's not done frequently. Cutbacks and emuslions both address one of the major problems with traditional Hot Mix Asphalt, which is the "hot" part. Hot mix is energy intensive and can usually only be laid in warm weather. If you can apply it effectively at lower temps by using a chemical or water to drop the viscosity, you save money on energy costs. You can also apply it in cooler temps than traditional Hot Mix. Emulsions come in many forms, depending on the formulation. You can use anionic, cationic or nonionic emulsions to largely the same effect. The chemistry of the binder itself is key here too, as some binders are more or less acidic. I always try to emphasize to people that it is a very complex material, and there are many ways to do it right (and WAY more ways to do it wrong). The trick with emulsifying asphalt is keeping the emulsion stable long enough to apply it.


This is cold pour crack fill. It's a pain in the ass to work with and doesn't work nearly as well as hot crack fill. It's basically just a thick sealcoat

Out in the midwest you are thousands of miles from the ocean so you get warmer summers and colder winters. That's why Minneapolis and Venice have such wildley different climates despite being at the same latitude

Even then I wouldn't say it controls how fast you're putting it down, It really controls how much you're putting down. You really shouldn't be changing that anyway if you want it consistent.


Shits easier with the v squeegee pointed forwards instead. This is called “cold crack filling.” It uses a rubberized or latex infused asphalt or coal tar substrate usually with a drying agent, sand and it’s actually water based. Don’t pay for this shit; hot tar crack filling is where it’s at; that’s what the dot people use on highways - it allows for the driveway to flex and retains a barrier so ice can’t enlarge the cracks in the winter.


Idk if this is what you’re talking about, but I worked for a summer for my county highway department. The main daily role was cracksealing. Team of 2 drivers, 1 crack grinder, 1 dust/rock blower, 1 tar layer (huge vat of hot tar with a wand with a nozzle on it), 1 tar spreader (what’s going on in this gif basically), and then 2 flagsmen. We’d rotate jobs every 30 minutes. Just now realize dot = department of transportation lol. Yeah. Makes the roadways last a lot longer. When using poor college students at minimum wage to maintain them, it’s a pretty solid strategy. The full time folks there were expensive union dudes (who usually were actually very anti-union, but we’re very happy with *their* union role). I may or may not have drawn a tar penis on a road near our high school rival town. Kinda miss that small town life stuff, but also don’t.

Those check points were great. There's practice and then there's the tool makers instruction. Like 1 shovel full = 10 feet of coverage 5 inches wide. I also assume that they might have to double back if the infill wasnt enough at spots.

Use wet wipes and really dig *into* your butthole, don’t just swipe past it. Do a dry pass first, then do another pass with the wet wipes. Throw the wet wipes away, don’t flush them, yes it’s gross but deal with it, get a lidded trash can and use a trash bag inside, it’s fine.


At that point just get one of those attachable bidets. Wiping in general has been shown to be ineffective in eliminating the poo, it just smears it around, which is why plenty of cultures still wet a hand or use a bidet. Also generates much less waste.


Or just use the poop knife. It has multiple uses!


I did this as a college job and the tar I used was a lot more fluid so our tool was closed so it wouldn’t spill out and had a bucket mounted to the top that dropped tar. Also the correct way is to route out the crack making a larger area for the tar to settle in

This is what I was wondering. The stuff in this video, although satisfying, doesn’t look like it settles in to fill the crack at all. Eventually(sooner as opposed to later) it’s going to sink in and have to be re-repaired right?


What's the purpose of this? If there's a crack, does that not mean that there's either not enough support underneath the road or that it grew and shrank (such as under heat and cooling)? If this is so, what on earth would filling this crack like this do? Surely, in 12 months there'd be another crack here for exactly the same reason as the first. Am I missing something here?

The crack isn't getting filled. This shit is useless. All the roads done like this are getting worse because there is still a cavity under that skim layer. That thin ass layer will peel up and the problem is back to where it was, water is still getting under the pavement, freezing and destroying the road from below. Those cracks need to have LIQUID tar flowed into, this shit isn't even a bandaid, it's just a waste of resources.

The goal is to prevent water from penetrating into the sub base (granular) that way is doesn't soften, fines don't get washed out, and if you live in an area with sub 0 temperatures water doesn't get in, freeze, and heave the road. This material prevents water penetration. It's servicing it's purpose. Does it make the road good as new? no. Does it slow degradation of the road and make it last a few more years before having to be replaced? Absolutely. Which in turn provides better life-cycle costing. You are correct. The point is to prevent water infiltation and slow the deterioration of the paving until it can be milled and overlayed, have a full depth patch, or even sub base replacement done depending on the extent of the failure.


This is correct. Also, this method is archaic in terms of cracksealing. New technology uses a pressurized valve to push the product into the crack and create a water retardant seal. This is also called: cracking, alligatoring or asphalt cancer. If not treated the water that penetrates through the crack deteriorates the base and causes further cracking. If cracks are over an 1/4” they need to be blown out before crack sealing. Lastly, in order to rejuvenate the asphalt a liquid coating that’s generally called “sealcoating” is applied. It has polymers in it which help prolong the life of the asphalt. Source: have sold this type of maintenance for one of the largest asphalt and concrete maintenance contractors in the US.

That was my thought as well. We’ve hired people to do this same treatment on our parking lot at work. But they had a different thingie that poured hot liquid (tar?) into the cracks. It’s been there for a couple years now with no issues.


The smell is both putrid and amazing.


I've noticed there is a really odd overlap between bad and good smells where they are "Bad but good." Makes me wonder why that is a thing.


That would seem to be the proper way to do it, you pour a hot liquid that's sticky and takes the space of where water would normally get into. It's like going to the dentist for a cavity and him just putting a crown over the top of the cavity. You didn't fix anything, you just put a temporary Band-Aid over the top of a problem.

Liquid bitumen does the same thing. It temporarily seals the crack and keeps water out. That is all this or liquid bitumen is designed to do. It is not a repair, it is just a very cheap way to slow the deterioration until there is funding to do actual repairs. This will flow into the crack as long as the ambient temps aren't too cold. Even actual superpave 'flows' to some degree. Especially in hot weather or under static loads. If the subgrade is already bad, the cracks will eventually expand and water will still get in until it is resealed again. Water can also pipe up by capillary action through the subgrade. Neither this or liquid bitumen mend the cracks in anyway. At this point the roadway will keep failing no matter what you do.

Eh... Its sort of the best thing you can do for asphalt that cracks like that. Even asphalt with good base material underneath and not subject to huge temperature swings will develop cracks. So it is sort of a bandaid in the sense that they could physically cut out the crack and pour new asphalt in there, but that would be tremendously more expensive and labor intensive than smearing some good ol tar in there. And also the new asphalt patches would still stand out in contrast to the existing, so it wouldn't really be an aesthetic improvement either, at least until the whole asphalt surface gets a new topcoat. In that case, it would look pretty good afterwards. ​ Asphalt moves around a little bit depending on temperature, loading, general age, land movement and probably some other factors I'm not aware of (I'm not an asphalt nerd, although I might be trying to come off as one :) ). As the stress cracks develop, it is preferable to fill them with relatively soft pitch that will slowly fill in the crack and prevent the ingress of dirt and debris, giving the asphalt a little room to wiggle. It works best on long 'transverse' cracks, but is essentially useless on asphalt that has cracks that are dendritic, having the appearance of crocodile skin. Once asphalt reaches that point it should just be replaced. ​ To respond quickly to the two other things you mentioned. Yes, the asphalt will likely crack again in new places, but hopefully the original cracks have provided the slab some wiggle room to remain mostly crack free. And the soil below can certainly be washed away - look up an example of a sinkhole forming. But luckily this is a pretty rare occurrence that is dependent on location, soil type, groundwater, and rainfall. in general a paved surface will protect the soil underneath it, at the cost of turning rainfall into storm runoff.

These guys are cutting corners using that thick sealcoat on those cracks instead of the hot tar crack fill they should be using, plus you're supposed to water that stuff down so it can penetrate the surface and spread more evenly. Hot tar in the cracks first, then 2 coats of asphalt sealer (sealcoat) over the whole lot.
