I tried restoring some witches, turns out they weren't witches.

MaceotheDark

Did they turn you into a newt?

ZombieJeezus3348

But what else burns apart from witches?

GoodAsAWink

MORE WITCES!

Im2bored17

Wood?

ZombieJeezus3348

Gooooooooood. So how can we tell is she is made of wood?

I'd argue and say it was very expected

thoothooth

They weren't witches tho

iamkeerock

They dressed her up like that.

cwfutureboy

She _does_ have a wart…

FewMail

Okay explain why she weighs the same as a duck then?

ducksarewitches

Who are you, who are so wise in the ways of science?

chuckdiesel86

Isn't it funny how witches never used their magic to stop people from killing them

udayrajsinghh

No they were probably smart enough to use their Magoc and make people think they are killing witches by making normal bitches seem like witches , because rather than using their magic in an offensive manner they used wit and make sure people think they killed the witches so that the hunt would stop .. maybe they are around us just smoking hash and killing cats idk

ILoveTuxedoKitties

Are you high? Witches love cats.

udayrajsinghh

And I love you.

ILoveTuxedoKitties

Taking that as a yes. Happy trails my friend

chuckdiesel86

Yeah I'm sure that's probably what happened.

da13371337bpf

Was it a duck?

Habasch12

Well it weighed as much as one

VanGoghXman

It was a floating church

FunFakeFacts

The house is not made of high-temperature thermoplastics, nor does it form an opaque oxide layer when exposed to ultraviolet light.

ouch82

Can I use a small lighter blowtorch to polish or restore my plastic headlights? Will it have the same effect?

changethebanner

Acetone vapor is the way to go.

griddlemancer

I tried restoring some farts, now it smells of farts and restored butt hair. What do?

Natural-Pick

Savor.

brandonhardyy

Cursed.

Someone's in the hot seat.

Spoodymen

U need “license”

xan3011

Can someone explain the science behind this?

Ch1ldofSatan

The flame melts the surface of the plastic making it smooth and shiny. This is called flame polishing. (Thanks for all of the love y’all!)

xan3011

Thanks! Have some silver :) Edit: wtf happened lol why am I getting awards 😆

Ch1ldofSatan

Thanks, my first silver!

Hopefully not your last!

Magic_tuna

Can you do anything with awards?? I’ve used Reddit forever but I still don’t really get what they do haha

Some of them give you a few coins to give other people awards.

It does nothing, you’re just donating money to reddit.

DeLaWarrr

NikkiT96

but why does it restore it to red?

Ch1ldofSatan

The original color is red. When wear and tear occurs it leaves smalls scratches that cloud the surface making it look pale. When the scratches are melted away there is no more cloudiness and discoloration. ( Edit: It has been brought to my attention that UV damage and oxidation plays a larger factor in discoloration than scratches.)

army-of-juan

But why male models?

paullyfitz

That’s pretty fantastic. Did they talk about it on an interview or something?

West_of_Ishigaki

In addition to scratches, the plastic resin has become oxidized due to UV exposure (these seats probably get lots of sunshine!). Red pigment is really hard to protect, and with heavy UV exposure it turns cloudy (paint on red cars can also suffer the same problem). This torch is melting away the oxidized top layer, allowing fresh red plastic to flow across the surface.

NietJij

My neighbor's historic Ferrari has this problem. I know what I'll get him for his birthday.

Scientolojesus

One blowtorch please Mr. Bezos.

So basically a Zamboni, but using fire instead of water

ILoveTuxedoKitties

Yes!

adudeguyman

I thought it was oxidation or sun damage.

Ch1ldofSatan

That too!

razorduc

That work on like car headlights too?

Legomyeggosplease

It will work on black plastic trim, and I assume any color plastic trim as well. I had a 2009 Explorer that all the black plastics were faded like these seats. I used my heat gun to restore it back to black. It takes forever with the heat gun though.

Ch1ldofSatan

I'm not sure, headlight plastic is more brittle than these seats and might just get scorched.

jhnnysalazar

Tooth paste works on headlights

_Connor

So does a $10 headlight polishing kit from your local auto store. Don't use toothpaste as polish.

pm-me-ur-naked-body

Car detailer used acetone vapor instead of fire because of car's headlamp has lower melting point

ChuniaC

Materials engineer here. This opaque look in thermoplastic materials is caused by crystallization which may be caused by stress or UV- radiation. This is the same mechanism that colors your drink cap white when you scratch it with your finger. The dye is not lost but becomes less visible due to the crystals scattering the light instead of absorbing it (the parts of it that isn't red light). Heating the material up above its glass transition temperature breaks these crystals and the original structure is restored, letting the material once again reflect only the red light.

complimentaryasshole

Thank you for the deeper dive! 👍

stifflizerd

I thought it was some sort of protective finish that needed to be melted on so I feel like we're in the same boat

BraveLittleToaster8

I thought it was some kind of flaming paint gun!

suavetobasco1985

This has triggered my contamination ocd centered around plastic (among other things) beyond my wildest dreams.

kronikcLubby

Really seals in the flavor.

crespoh69

How many times is this viable?

Ch1ldofSatan

I’m not sure, the exposure to heat is brief so I imagine you could do it a lot.

One_pop_each

I live in the South and the sun faded most of the outside plastic on my car. Mostly where the windshield wipers are. I took a heat gun a few times and got it back to new before I found out there is a UV protectant spray I can use.

DinnerForBreakfast

You can do that?! I know what I'm doing this weekend!

throwthegarbageaway

Probably forever if done properly, you’re not removing any material, just re-flowing the surface which then solidifies again. If you do it wrong (too hot, i guess?) you’d be burning material and *then* you’d have an issue, but even then it probably would be a negligible loss of material.

flight45mlb

I'm a little doubtful on the forever. With enough UV exposure a 4x4 post (made of plastic) can have all the color bleached out of it.

Lebossatron01

Isn’t it just melting/burning the sun bleached surface of the plastic and exposing the actual red plastic beneath it?

hugow

Yes, that's exactly what they are doing

Frigginpizzaa

Is it sand blasted before hand?

trelam88

They don't have too. Since it is thick plastic, all they really have to do is clean the surface of dust and particulate and then the fire literally melts the top layer back to its original condition by removing some of it and leveling all the scratches, etc.

Signal_Rip_4490

It burns off all the hot dog farts.

mistahowe

This comment is why I come to Reddit

-Disgruntled-Goat-

it is call flame polishing. map gas is used instead of propane since the propane reacts with the plastic. https://youtu.be/Mmd56UMHDK0

l3ane

I'm completely pulling out of my ass but I think the surface of the old plastic is oxidized, meaning a ton of little oxygen molecules have deluded the once shiny plastic making it look "milky". Melting the plastic allows the oxygen to escape (or even burn up in the flame) thus removing the "milky" finish.

ptrakk

I think you are right

thejoblessasshole

Does that mean the chairs become thinner after the melting and this can be done only a few times before they have to be replaced?

roffinator

no, it just relevels the surface. but there might be bigger chemical reactions happening which would be not as easily fixable. but those should only be visible after a lot of repititions

newenglandredshirt

ricst

Unless it's a college stadium. Some hold a 100k.

AbstrActivities

And then they proceed to fill all 100k seats with paying spectators watching college athletes play for free

CodeLobe

If we extrapolate from pro sports, backwards, I should be able to completely fill a stadium the size of texas with a sport that consists of multiple pools of stolen semen fighting over a donated egg.

Zebidee

I've watched that video, just from further away.

john_the_fetch

Me too - I think. Only instead of pools of semen fighting over an egg. They were all confused and running about asking where the nearest vagina was located. At least the better players were asking. The dumb semen were stubborn, refusing to ask directions, and probably couldn't tell an asshole from a birth canal.

vendetta2115

I’ve been struggling to figure out what the fuck this comment means but I give up.

Pretentious_Douche

Pro Sports: Pays athletes well, mild attendance. College Sports: Doesn't pay athletes, high attendance. Baby Batter Battle: Athletes pay to play, everyone on the planet watches

vendetta2115

Someone did the math on college football’s revenue per player and it was over $300k per player (I believe it was $330,000). So the next time someone tells you that it’s fair because they get free college tuition, ask them if four years at a random public school should cost $330,000.

Fanatical_Idiot

I mean, the kind of person you're debating that with would probably say it should cost that much though.

vendetta2115

> the kind of person you're debating that with A moron? lol. But seriously it always baffles me how people have no problem with federal and local funding for public schools for the first 13 years of a person’s education but funding it for the last four is a radical socialist agenda and would never work (even though it works fantastically in dozens of other developed nations around the world). It wouldn’t even cost that much. The increase to the military budget in 2017 was almost $100 billion. If they had instead used that to fund paid public college tuition and trade schools, it would have been enough to fund every graduating senior who wants to go to college and still have about $15 billion left over. We were already spending more money on our military than the top 10 next countries **combined** before 2017 (I think 2016’s budget was around $650 billion), why did the military need another $100 billion? The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are either over or nearly over and ISIS had completely lost all of their territory by the time the 2017 appropriations bill went into effect. Or if that same Congress had just not cut the corporate tax rate from 38% to 21% in 2017, that would’ve been enough money to pay for it every year. Hell, even the first stimulus bill that was like $2 trillion would’ve been enough to pay for tuition-free public college for over 20 years. That would’ve made a lot bigger positive impact on the economy. I was one of those kids who could get into almost any school but couldn’t afford any of them, and who struggled to find scholarships for their major (physics). If I hadn’t joined the Army I’d have never been able to go to a decent college regardless of my grades / intelligence / hard work. I often think about all the kids that were like me but could join the military for one reason or another, but then also I think I shouldn’t have had to sign away my youth to go fight in a war and almost die just so I could get an education that qualifies me for something better than a Walmart greeter or grocery store cashier.

Fanatical_Idiot

I'll be honest i wasn't really ready to start a big discussion about this, but yeah. The people arguing the arrangement is fair are typically morons.

dakoellis

It's not quite that simple. Most college sports cost more than they make and are subsidized by the football program. That's not to say the money isn't outrageous (with how much coaches make for instance) but once you start paying football players, men's basketball (usually the only other money maker on a college campus) will want money and then you have women's basketball saying they should get the same, followed by every other athlete. When does the trickle down end? How long before smaller schools have to decide between cutting other sports or falling so far behind in football because they don't make as much?

Arsenault185

Right, but the revenue generated from from the football program pays for other scholarships as well

gian_69

they‘re payed with ✨exposition✨

barleyhogg1

Well...plastic is pretty much immortal. Just saying.

CodeLobe

I thought plastic was made from the tortured souls of dinosaurs.

barleyhogg1

No, it's made from the ancient souls of long dead plants. If we needed to fuel our cars with dinosaurs we would have run out quite a while ago.

I_Can_Haz_Brainz

Oil comes from marine organisms, bacteria, algae, and plants, not dinosaurs.

Taco_Dave

Kinda, but usually not really in a useful way. There are all different kinds of plastics, but a common feature among them is that they are often degraded by the sun, and turn brittle. They break into pieces, but the pieces don't decompose. This is one of the reasons I absolutely loathe the trend of putting unnecessary plastic on the exterior of cars. Just because it won't rust, doesn't mean it's not going deteriorate and look like shit and or get busted.

EagleAce047

RESTORATION 100

scuba_steve94

will this work on black plastics of cars that have faded over time? asking for a friend

infector944

Indeed it does. Way better than back to black. I usually use a paint stripper, not a torch. Torch does work, same principle applies.

-Disgruntled-Goat-

yes it is called flame polishing. look it up and if you do it use map gas

WowemuGM

It will work, but only for a certain period of time and you’ll be limited to how many times you can actually do it before you’ve ruined the plastic details. I’d look into coating the plastics with something like Carpro Cquartz DLux

skittlemethis

Is this common practice? Because since I was a kid I wondered why some seats were bumpy and some smooth, some cracked in a way that weight wouldn't crack it.

jefftatro1

Wonder how they figured that out?

Ch1ldofSatan

The fire melts the surface making it smooth again. Tbh, probably just some pyromaniac looking for an excuse to wield a giant torch.

-Disgruntled-Goat-

it is a common industry practice called flame polishing https://youtu.be/Mmd56UMHDK0

Oziumz

amitrion

Wait, can you do this to old, hazy car head lights too?

hamandjam

Flame polishing doesn't work well on polycarbonate (the plastic in headlamps) and sanding yields much better results. If you try to flame polish polycarbonate, it will often bubble and you certainly don't want that. These seats are most likely some sort of acrylic. Acrylic is more scratch and wear resistant, but not as strong. Polycarbonate is much stronger but scratches more easily. If you try to flame polish polycarbonate, it will often bubble and you certainly don't want that. Next time you go through the drive-thru at your bank, look at the plastic tubes. Those are polycarbonate. You can likely tell how old their pneumatic system is by how scratched to shit their tubes are.

ontbijtkoek

This is a good description but I want to add that if you flamepolish polycarbonate it can often bubble, you certainly don’t want that!

Streetlgnd

Pretty sure they had to sand and clean all those chairs before the easy flamethrower part though. This is the easy part lol.
