Mechanical Gameboy Advance Mk2 (prototype)
By - noodlemandan
"HAS SCIENCE GONE TOO FAR?!?!"
Your modders were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should.
hay I'm so proud of you, you did fantastic. that being said i fucking hate this. can't wait till you make a final model!
I'm just hoping I can scrape together the skills to make a final model. Ideally I'd want to design a custom front shell to be 3d printed, but I don't have the skills to do so
don't give up you'll learn what you need or find someone to help you've got a good start
You forgot to fix the shoulder buttons.
One step at a time
This is soo stupid.... I WANT IT!
It is both stupid, and was surprisingly easy to do (minus the shell trimming, which was a pain because I don't have a Dremel)
Good on you for persevering. It's definitely a one of a kind GBA.
Technically it's a 2 of a kind, because of the previous prototype
This is clearly a totally necessary mod that every GBA should have.
I have no words for this... except for: I love it!
and it creeps me out at the same time!
It is extremely cursed
You criminal. You absolute madman.
Very cursed eww
This had me laughing pretty hard ngl
I would absolutely love this for rpgs, but it would be absolutely terrible for any platformers. I still want one though!
I can report that it's not terrible. Not great either though
I should totally try a platformer on it. Give me 10 minutes and I'll report back how well it plays Super Mario Land
What an unlikely cross of two of my favorite hobbies. Please cross post this to r/mechanicalkeyboards, I'm sure some would get a kick out of it.
I actually posted to that subreddit too. I don't know how to crosspost from the app I use on android.
Oh god kill it, have some mercy
You're a monster for mutilating a gba
I think you'll find I mutilated TWO GBAs because I made 2 prototypes
My man's said "nope, I'm 2 monsters in 1 bitch, get it right"
Horrifying. A better idea is to put a circle pad in that replaces the standard left buttons
In this revision I cut the shell to sink the keys. Unfortunately I couldn't place them in better positions because of screw posts and components on the board having clearance issues.
This is awesome. I have had a low key thought to mount a Gameboy/3DS in side a clear acrylic fight stick and this feels along that line of thought.
I had the idea less than 24 hours ago now, and this is my second prototype. First version I posted yesterday and that one was a proof of concept with tactile keys hot glued to the outside of the shell, this one I actually cut a shell (well, 2 shells because I screwed up the first) to fit the keys within. I will eventually make a third run of it with low profile cherry brown keys and some custom keycaps, but that won't be until I get a Dremel. I cut this case with a coping saw and flush cutters and it was a painful experience
That sounds rough but love the dedication. The low pro cherrys will probably make this really nice and slim. Wonder if you could mount the d-pad at a 45 so that it lines up with whats expected. Either way really nice job.
Dude, that's a sick concept! It would be awesome to see
That is incredibly cursed and incredibly blessed at the same time.
Now do backlit keys!
I probably could if I had the skills lmao.
Some would consider those skills un-natural…
All I did was solder wire from the contacts to the switches lol
"where is the rgb?"
"ayo what kind of switches do you have on your gba"
True answer: They're knock off Cherry Blues from a cheap broken mechanical keyboard I had kicking around
"just because you can. Doesn't mean you should"
This is some cyberpunk level lol
When you liked the clicky buttons of the SP but you didn’t think they were clicky enough
It looks super interesting. How was this made?
With a small amount of effort and some soldering
Downvoted, its missing the rgb, damn poser. /s
If you have a 3d printer you may want to design a shell that can fit the new switches or even design circular key caps. The possibilities here are endless!
I unfortunately don't, nor do I have the skills to do so. If I could I would though
Play this on a plane and see how long it takes before you get attacked haha

This made my day lol
I have never been so offended by something that I 100% agree with
This should have been the original design, it's perfect. The only thing missing is a water cooler and you're good to go
This is really funny to me for some reason
It's because it's dumb
The select button isn’t a key literally unplayable
Did you modify the gb file for Tetris? The original one doesnt not have that iconic theme in it
Nope. It's just the cart I have
I posted it there too
This is awful! I love it.
Yeah, but why?
Maybe try putting in the switches on the d-pad in diagonally so you don't need to stagger them like that? That'd make some keycaps feel pretty awkward, being at an angle, but a few blank DSA keycaps could make that work and maybe take a little bit of the jank out of it.
The trouble with that is that the diagonal of a square is wider than any side, so I'd still have to stagger but even more drastically
Look into keychron low profile mechanical switches
If you can find a way to fit everything into a nice design this will be peak gameboy
With your first prototype, you had my curiosity. Now, you have my attention. Please see this through and set the example for every modder with a dream!
I am calling the police. Also, very cool!
Poor little game boy 😢
My hobbies are merging again!!
Now sell it and offer box jades so children will never be able to play it during the night
I now definitely want to make one too, using low profile switches and custom buttons 👀
Low profile are on the list for my eventual next prototype. I used what I had lying around for this and the previous prototype
